5 Jobs Working with Children and How to Get Them in the UK - PeopleCert Certifications

Teacher

One of the most popular employment opportunities open to those who want to work with kids is, of course, teaching. From primary school to college, teachers are an integral part of a child’s life and development at all ages. Another great advantage to teaching (aside from being a huge influence on the next generation and igniting a passion for learning of course!) is that you can go into an area you are interested and knowledgeable about to inspire young people; which also means there are many pathways to get into teaching.

Teachers hold degrees in a variety of subjects, but after completing your degree in your chosen subject, you then need to go on to gain QTS (Qualified Teacher Status). According to UCAS, there are many routes to obtaining this depending on your past experience.

Nursery Assistant

If you want to work with kids from 6 months to 4 years old then working in a nursery could be for you. There are many opportunities to get into being a Nursery Nurse or Nursery Assistant, and it has the advantage of being able to learn on the job. With the Early Years Educator Level 3, you learn invaluable theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills covering child development, nutrition, professional roles and safeguarding to ensure you give the children in your care the best start in life.

Roles within most Nurseries vary from lunchtime assistants to room leaders and management. Lunchtime assistants, much like in a school setting, largely tackle the domestic duties such as preparing lunches and helping with the daily running of the nursery. Nursery assistants are often employed in larger nurseries, and work with the children to ensure they are cared for as well as meeting their development milestones e.g. developing their language skills, knowledge of shapes and numbers and motor skills. These two positions often don’t require a formal qualification; however Nursery Nurses have to have a qualification which you can often gain whilst working, such as a Level 3 Educator qualification.

Paediatric Nurse

For those wanting to go into the healthcare sector with children, paediatric nursing is the obvious choice. Paediatric nurses are Registered Nurses, so obtaining a nursing degree first and then specialising in working with children is the common route to this career. Going to university is one route to nursing, or you could start out as a healthcare assistant at a local hospital and train on the job to become a nurse. According to the Step Into the NHS website, paediatric nurses usually need 5 GCSE’s and at least 2 A Levels. After A Level, most paediatric nurses enrol onto a nursing degree course, however there are apprenticeships available throughout the UK.

Teaching Assistant

For those who want to work with more challenging children, or offer support for kids with difficulties, there are a variety of roles available depending on the area you want to work in. If you have an interest in helping children with learning difficulties, dyslexia, dyspraxia or those on the autism spectrum then experience working with children with those conditions as well as knowledge of the conditions is essential. Gaining work experience in a specialist school, volunteering at a youth club and taking a course on educational and behavioural difficulties is a great way to get into that sector.

Degrees such as Education Studies, Child Development and Psychology will also stand you in good stead, as you have an advanced knowledge of how to help children with complex needs.

Babysitter / Nanny

If you are just starting out looking for experience working with children, babysitting can be the perfect way to get it. Looking after kids, however, can be more challenging than many people think, so gaining experience caring for kids for a few hours here are there can help build your confidence and knowledge about working with children.

Becoming a nanny could be seen as the next step on from babysitting, and nannies are certainly in great demand among many working families. As a nanny however, you are taking on a lot more responsibility and often live with the family during the week; becoming another member of the family in many cases. There are many different routes to get into nannying, and ultimately it is down to the parents to decide what they want from their nanny.

Top 5 Skills Employers Look for in Childcare Workers

Good Communication Skills

No matter what age children you are caring for, and what role you are employed in, the ability to communicate with the children themselves as well as your colleagues is essential.

Empathy & Compassion

Working with kids can sometimes be tricky as they often aren’t able to voice their thoughts or emotions. Being able to empathise with children is key to being a good childcare worker.

Ability to Remain Calm Under Pressure

Anyone who has spent time around children will know it can often be stressful. The ability to stay calm and collected is one of the top qualities which employers look for.

Attention to Detail

Being able to pay close attention to detail is key for many reasons. From ensuring the safety of the children to tracking their development, as a childcare worker being able to pick up on the small things definitely counts.

Problem Solving Skills

Whether you are a nursery assistant or a paediatric nurse, there will be problems which arise which you will need to be able to handle. Develop your problem-solving skills and you could be on your way to a rewarding career with children

Future Skills Guideline For Everyone - PeopleCert Certifications

In this rapidly evolving employment landscape, some of the most in-demand occupations of 2018 didn’t exist as little as five years ago.

This progression is only set to increase in upcoming years, which is why it is essential for both businesses and individuals to anticipate the necessary future skill sets that will help them to thrive in an ever-changing working environment; successfully adapting to these future careers.

This widespread innovation and automation is not something we should view as a disruption. Rather, we should embrace the push into careers that are focused around knowledge and creation. Technology will continue to create more exciting opportunities for the future workforce, leading us to bigger and better things. For those industry areas that choose to embrace these new changes, employees are set to experience new job opportunities, as companies begin to employ more high-tech processes and virtual collaboration.

This article will provide you with all of the information needed to ‘future-proof’ your career. From valuable skills to careers that are predicted to thrive with these technological changes, you’ll be future ready in no time!

Future Skills

While no one can predict what the future will look like for jobs in the UK; we can definitely pinpoint the skills that will be the most in demand in the workplace based on current trends. Below are five skills predicted to become valuable to careers in the years to come.

Critical Thinking and Complex Problem-Solving

Although it is anticipated that we will become increasingly reliant on technology in the workplace (even more than we are now!) and automation may take over several jobs that currently exist; there is one thing that technology is not close to being sophisticated enough to do just yet: critical thinking. We are not ready to trust computers to do that much heavy lifting for us, which is why your future career will require you to have exceptional critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills. A majority of jobs will require you to be always analysing a variety of situations, deliberate solutions depending on and influenced by these situations and employ logic and reasoning to make decisions and problem solve.

Creativity

Again, another aspect that robots have simply not mastered yet is the art of creativity. The ability to create original content will be one that is highly sought after in the future, so the more creative you are, the less likely your job will be overrun by technology and digital advancements.

STEM

With the rise in demand for careers in science, technology, engineering and maths, these industry areas are predicted to remain very popular in the future. STEM careers highlight the importance of skills in technology – a reoccurring theme in this article – as these advanced skills are deemed necessary to keep up in this progressive world.

Interpersonal Skills

A self-explanatory skill – yet just as important as the others – people skills are an essential factor within a workplace. Interpersonal skills are highly valued by employers at present and there are no signs of this skill losing its worth in future careers. To succeed in the future job market, it is essential that you know how to work effectively with people. Some traits that fall under this overarching skill are the ability to communicate well (both verbal and non-verbal), team-work and collaboration, as well as more emotion-based traits such as empathy.

New(er) Technology

It always pays to be up-to-date with new and emerging technologies that continue to arise within the digital scope. Your familiarity with platforms such as social media, and skills such as a sound understanding of analytics and cloud-based programs will continue to put you one step ahead of those who are still stuck in the days where cassettes and VCRs were the latest evolutionary products.

PEOPLECERT-Accredited SureSkills proudly announce Ireland’s first ever ITIL training Course

ITIL is the world’s IT Service Management standard and the feedback from delegates who recently attended the first ever ITIL® Practitioner Course indicated they appreciated the two-day course which provided individuals with practical guidance on ‘how’ to adopt and adapt the ITIL framework and puts the factual knowledge of ITIL® Foundation, which they had taken with SureSkills, into a more practical context. The ITIL® Practitioner certification offers practical guidance on how to adopt and adapt the ITIL framework to support your business' objectives.

This new programme is a natural next step for most ITIL Foundation delegates who have already learned the basics of IT Service Management (ITSM) and the business value of well-designed and delivered services. Where ITIL Foundation focuses on the 'what' and the 'why', ITIL Practitioner shows 'how' to start adopting and adapting the ITIL framework within day-to-day situations and responsibilities, giving individuals more confidence in their ability to structure and contribute to ITSM initiatives.

Commenting on the course, Ruaidhri McSharry, Director of Service Management in SureSkills said: “I feel that the participants really benefited from the practical context of showing how ITIL can be applied and SureSkills ourselves having the practical experience applying ITIL made the sessions even more real.”

Commenting on the feedback from the delegates: Lead trainer Aidan Walsh said that “They found the instruction clear and useful, and the atmosphere lively and participative, and 100% of the participants were satisfied or very satisfied with the way the training was structured. As the courses continue, participants’ comments and feedback will certainly be taken into account.”

ITIL Practitioner examinations are delivered over PEOPLECERT’s state-of-the-art assessment platforms to candidates who successfully complete their training. PEOPLECERT manages the entire certification process, from accrediting SureSkills in delivering ITIL Practitioner training, to managing candidate exam registration, delivering exams over the most advanced assessment systems in the world, as well as issuing and delivering certificates.
